The Bangladesh government has decided to establish an embassy in Ireland, one of the most prosperous countries in Europe, with the aim of further strengthening economic and diplomatic relations.
This is being seen as a part of the expansion of foreign relations and expatriate welfare policy. The 48th meeting of the Advisory Council approved it on Thursday. The meeting held at the Office of the Chief Advisor was presided over by Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
According to the Cabinet Division, the Advisory Council approved the opening of an embassy in Ireland as per the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The embassy will be opened in Dublin, the capital of Ireland.
Bangladesh has established economic and diplomatic relations with the European country of Ireland since the country gained independence. The demand for establishing an embassy to provide services to expatriate Bangladeshis living in the country has been a long-standing one.
Although there have been discussions and criticisms about establishing an embassy in Ireland at various times since 2017, it has not been possible to implement it so far. However, when the current interim government decided to establish a permanent embassy there, it has given hope to Bangladeshis living in Ireland. The expatriate Bangladeshis living there are demanding its implementation soon.
Dr. Musabbir Hossain Rubel, a medical physician at the Portiuncula University Hospital in Ireland, said, "Ireland is a technocrat hub in the world. There are all kinds of multidisciplinary and technical companies here. If we establish an embassy here, then skilled engineers and experts in various fields including pharmaceutical companies and IT can come to work." The establishment of the embassy will increase Bangladesh's trade and investment opportunities with Ireland.
Bangladeshis currently residing in Ireland receive consular services through the Bangladeshi High Commission in London, UK.
The Bangladesh government currently operates more than 80 diplomatic missions worldwide, including about 58 permanent embassies and about 20 consular missions.
