Baku, November 13 (Special Correspondent/OurVoice): Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev criticized "Western fake news" about the country's emissions and said nations "should not be blamed" for having fossil fuel reserves. The country plans to expand gas production by up to a third over the next decade.
Aliyev added, "Oil, gas, wind, sun, gold, silver, copper, all... are natural resources and countries should not be blamed for having them, and should not be blamed for bringing these resources to the market, because the market needs them."
Shortly afterwards, UN chief António Guterres told the conference that doubling down on the use of fossil fuels was "absurd". He said the "clean energy revolution" had arrived and that no government could stop it.
Separately, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pledged further reductions on emissions, saying the UK will now aim for an 81% decrease by 2035. The UK called for other countries to match the new target.
Meanwhile, the demand of Bangladesh, which is extremely affected by the climate crisis, is 1 thousand 200 million dollars (1 lakh 44 thousand crores of taka) per year. This money is needed to meet the losses that Bangladesh has to face year after year and to provide clean energy. In the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, Cop 29, the chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus press secretary Shafiqul Alam said.
The press secretary said that the annual loss due to climate is 12 billion dollars. But Bangladesh is getting 340 to 350 million dollars as a grant. An additional $250 million is being borrowed. They are highlighting this terrible situation and the necessary financing to solve it in Baku.
The press secretary added that the country's 29 NGOs and civil society organizations are taking part in the climate talk this year. The chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus said to pave the way for more financial aid by highlighting the dire situation in the country. The Chief Adviser wants Bangladesh's concerns and needs to be included in the declaration that will be adopted at the end of the conference.
