IU Officials Observe Work Abstention for Salary Hike

Kushtia, February 27 (IU Correspondent/OurVoice): The officers of Islamic University abstained from work on the campus in Kushtia on Saturday pushing for three demands, including increase in salary and retirement age extension.

About one hundred officers under the banner of the IU Officers’ Association sat in front of the university’s administrative building from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The demands are an increased pay scale, the extension of retirement age from 60 to 62 years and a change in working hours from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm instead of 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

The students, specially the freshers, suffered a lot due to the work abstention of the officers. The students claimed that they could not take their certificates from the university’s controller of examinations office and the freshers could not enroll themselves in time for the officials work abstention.

They started observing work abstention from February 19 as the university administration did not take any initiative regarding them in the university’s 254th syndicate meeting held on the campus on February 7.

The university authorities, earlier, assured them to look into their demands in the syndicate meeting but they did not take any decision.

We, as a result, are compelled to do the work abstention, IU Officers’ Association President ATM Emdadul Alam said.

The protesters at the sit-in urged to the Vice-Chancellor to call for an emergency meeting to discuss their demands.

They would continue with their demonstration until their demands were met, ATM Emdadul Alam said.

Among others, IUOA General Secretary Walid Hasan Mukut, Mintu Kumar Bishnu, Abdul Hannan, Rashiduzzaman Khan Tutul and Ukil Uddin were present in the work abstention.
