Dr. Rashid Askari Made Dean of IU Arts Faculty

Kushtia, April 30 (Correspondent/OurVoice): Dr. M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari, popularly known as Dr. Rashid Askari, Professor of English Department has been appointed as the Dean of Arts Faculty of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia.

IU Registrar (in charge) Ataur Rahman said that the university Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shaikh Abdus Salam appointed Dr. Rashid Askari to the post for the next two years.

The new appointment was made as the tenure of the previous dean Professor M Sarwar Murshed of Bangla Department concluded recently, he said.

Dr. Rashid Askari said “I will try to discharge my duties and responsibilities conscientiously to take the faculty to new heights and in this regard, I look forward to the cooperation of the concerned.”

Dr. Rashid Askari is a writer, academic, fictionist, translator and media personality. He was the former vice chancellor of the University. Askari was born in 1965 in the sleepy little town of Rangpur during the tumultuous times of the country’s independence struggle. He took an Honours and a Masters in English from Dhaka University with distinction, and a PhD in English literature from the University of Poona, India. His debut as a writer was marked in 1996 by his book The Dying Homeland. Until recently he has nine books and about a hundred articles/essays to his credit. Postmodern Literary and Critical Theories (2002), Indo-English Literature and Others (1996), The Wounded Land, (2011) and Nineteen Seventy-One and Other Stories, (2012) deserve special mention. He edited English Writings of Tagore- 3 Volumes (2012-2013) published in commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of the poet. His short story collection Nineteen Seventy-One and Other Stories was translated into Hindi and French.
