568 IU Students to Get Soft Loan for Phones

Kushtia, January 31 (IU Correspondent/OurVoice): As many as 568 students of Islamic University are getting soft loans from University Grants Commission (UGC) to buy smartphone for attending classes online during the pandemic.  

A total of 2,047 indigent students applied for the loan but the university gave the approval of 568 students for the loan, IU soft loan approval committee convener and Science Faculty Dean Professor Mizanur Rahman said on Sunday. 

The money will be sent to the account of each needy student, who had earlier applied for the loan. 

The students will have to refund the money in maximum of four installments before completing their graduation, he said.

The students were asked to contact to the finance and account branch through the chairman of respective departments if they did not receive the money.

On 4 November last, the UGC in a meeting decided to provide soft loans to some 41,501 students of 39 public universities to buy smartphones to participate in their online academic activities. Each student will get maximum Tk 8,000 as loan without any interest.
