World Migratory Bird Day Celebrated amid Festivity in Kushtia

The World Migratory Bird Day was observed at Kheyaghat area of Haripur union under sadar upazila in Kushtia on Saturday amid festivity.

‘Kichir-Michir, a Bird Club in Kushtia, in association with Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF) organised a campaign and discussion programme to mark the day.

Kichir-Michir executive member Mofrad Hossain Alindo addressed the discussion programme as the guest with Kichir-Michir president Abu Taher in the chair.

Kichir-Michir advisor Sadanando Mondal, its general secretary Fariha Iqbal, M A Muhit, Shadia Noorin Nooshra, Fardin and Anik and S I Sohel also spoke in the programme.

Addressing the programme, the speakers expressed a strong and common message that successful migratory bird conservation can only be achieved if efforts are united worldwide.

They shed light on the importance of the migratory birds, mentioning that the birds connect people, ecosystems and nations.

The speakers also explained why migratory birds are important to conserve from environmental and cultural as well as religious perspectives, the negative consequences of hunting and inspired them to spread the message amidst others of the locality as well.

People from all walks of life including local boatmen, fishermen and land cultivators who are dependent on the migratory bird habitat for livelihood were present in the programme.

M Selim, a local ward councilor, said that it was the first bird conservation event he witnessed in the locality. He would stand against any hunter occurrences if any local people found involved in such incidents, he added.

East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) sponsored the programme.
