BAU Admin Took No Visible Action Despite Edu Ministry Letter

Mymensingh, Nov 14 (BAU Correspondent/OurVoice): Education Ministry had given a letter on 22 October to know what action the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) authorities took against the Bangladesh Chhattra League (BCL) leaders who tortured a student overnight in a residential hall. But the university authorities took no visible action on the matter although education ministry asked to give a report to them within next seven working days.

Acting Registrar Saiful Islam said, ‘We sent a letter to the Education Ministry replying that, we would take necessary steps recommended by the probe committee.’

Earlier on 5 August, a first year student named Maqsudul Haque Emu of Animal Husbandry Faculty was tortured overnight at hall for not giving Salam to the BCL President of Shaheed Jamal Hossain Hall. With the instruction of the hall President Dipok Haldar other leaders of the hall got fierce upon Emu.

From reliable sources it is known that, the hall Vice-President Md Abdullah Hissh Shafi, Press and Publication Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shawon and Library Secretary Md Rahat Hossain were involved in the torture occurrence. They called Emu at room East-5 around mid-night and tortured till late-night.

Later, a three-member probe committee was formed by the university administration. The probe committee included Professor Dr A K M Zakir Hossain of Crop Botany Department, Associate Student Affair Adviser Professor Md Azharul Islam and Assistant Proctor Dr Chayon Goswami. However, the notification did not provide any instructions on how many days the probe report should be submitted.

Proctor Dr Md Azharul Hoque confirmed that the probe committee submitted a report on the torture.

BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Lutful Hassan said, ‘The case is under processing with the law adviser. We hope to take immediate action against the persons liable for the incident.’
